What Is AI?

A plain-English guide to artificial intelligence, machine learning, generative AI, and how modern AI systems are used.

What AI means

Artificial intelligence is software designed to perform tasks that normally require human judgment, pattern recognition, language understanding, or prediction. Today, most practical AI is built with machine learning: systems trained on examples rather than hand-written rules.

Machine learning vs generative AI

Machine learning models classify, rank, forecast, and recommend. Generative AI models create text, images, audio, code, or video from prompts. Both rely on statistical patterns learned from data, but generative systems are optimized to produce new outputs.

Why it matters

AI is becoming infrastructure for search, productivity software, customer support, cybersecurity, scientific research, and creative work. The important questions are accuracy, safety, privacy, cost, and whether the tool solves a real problem.

What to watch

Watch model capability, regulation, open-source releases, enterprise adoption, chip supply, and safety testing. Those signals usually matter more than hype around any single demo.
