OpenAI is adding card and device limits to ChatGPT as part of its security measures. Users who link too many subscriptions to the same payment card or device will not be able to start new ones.

ChatGPT also caps the number of paid accounts per device. When a user reaches the limit, they see "Device limit reached," and the affected account can no longer be used on that device.

The limits apply to ChatGPT Go, Plus, Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500. Free accounts and Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans are not counted. According to OpenAI's support page, logging out of an account does not automatically free up a spot for another account.

The Decoder reports that the policy will likely affect users who have been switching between multiple paid accounts on one device to get more usage from low-cost flat-rate subscriptions. OpenAI points instead to buying extra credits or usage resets, which the report describes as generally more expensive than an additional subscription. The report also suggests OpenAI is shifting toward revenue over growth, pointing to its move to merge Chat and Work. That interpretation is The Decoder's, not a statement from OpenAI.
