Google Deepmind has launched the Deepmind Institute (DMI), a new research organization structured to address existential questions about artificial general intelligence. The institute operates as an interdisciplinary platform, bringing together technologists with researchers from arts, humanities, and policy backgrounds to examine AGI safety, governance, and control risks.

The initiative reflects a deliberate shift in how leading AI labs approach long-term challenges. Rather than confining AGI research to computer scientists and engineers, Deepmind's leadership recognizes that questions about how AGI systems should be governed, aligned with human values, and safely deployed require input from philosophers, ethicists, social scientists, and policymakers.

Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and James Manyika lead the institute.
