Harvard Business School's newly launched HBS Foundry program charges $699 for access to an intensive startup bootcamp that leans heavily on generative AI. The centerpiece of the curriculum involves AI-generated avatars of actual HBS instructors who provide real-time feedback during practice pitches, mock board meetings, and other founder simulations.

The program targets aspiring entrepreneurs who want condensed training without the $1.5 million price tag of HBS's residential MBA. Instead of paying for years on campus, founders get weeks of structured instruction built around interactive sessions with instructor avatars trained on teaching styles and expertise from HBS faculty members.

The avatars operate as sophisticated chatbots with human faces. They respond to pitch rehearsals, probe assumptions in business plans, and simulate investor questioning. This approach scales instruction beyond what traditional instructor-led workshops can deliver. One instructor can theoretically mentor hundreds of founders simultaneously through AI versions of themselves, removing the bottleneck of human availability and geographic constraints.

Harvard positions this as democratizing access to business education. The $699 price point sits far below MBA tuition but remains high enough to signal value and filter for committed participants. The program runs asynchronously, allowing founders to practice pitches at 3 a.m. if needed and receive avatar feedback instantly.

The technical implementation combines video synthesis with language models. Each avatar learns patterns from recorded lectures, past Q&A sessions, and documented feedback from its corresponding instructor. The AI mimics speech patterns, personality quirks, and pedagogical approaches. Founders interact through a web interface where they upload pitch videos or engage in text-based scenarios.

HBS Foundry reflects broader trends in higher education technology. Universities increasingly treat celebrity instructors as intellectual property and distribute their expertise through digital channels. Stanford's online courses, MIT's OpenCourseWare, and Coursera partnerships all pursued similar logic. Harvard now takes the concept further by creating persistent digital versions of its faculty.

Questions emerge around authenticity and learning outcomes. Students accustomed to human interaction may experience different results with avatar feedback. The AI versions cannot adapt to entirely novel situations the way human instructors might. They also cannot adjust teaching based on emotional cues or personal circumstances. An instructor avatar recognizes patterns from training data but lacks genuine understanding.

Harvard has not yet published efficacy studies comparing avatar-led instruction to human-led alternatives. The bootcamp launched recently, so longitudinal data on founder success rates does not yet exist. Initial uptake appears strong given social media buzz around the concept, but whether founders who train with instructor avatars outperform those using traditional bootcamps remains an open question.
