The integration addresses a long-standing fragmentation problem in wearable health data. Fitbit, acquired by Google in 2021, remained siloed from Apple's health platform despite both companies dominating the wearables market. Users with both devices faced the choice of committing to one ecosystem or managing duplicate data across apps.
Google Health 5.05 pushes the responsibility for interoperability onto Google rather than forcing users into ecosystem lock-in. Someone might wear a Fitbit for tracking but prefer to review all health metrics in Apple Health on their iPhone.
