Snowflake launched Cortex AI Gateway, a control layer that lets enterprises manage how AI agents access data, tools, and models across their infrastructure. The platform works with agents built by competitors, including Anthropic's Claude Code and Cursor, addressing a growing concern about runaway AI costs and unauthorized data access in enterprise environments.
The gateway functions as a centralized checkpoint. It monitors agent behavior, enforces access policies, and prevents agents from executing unchecked operations that could drain budgets or expose sensitive information. This matters because AI agents are increasingly autonomous, making decisions and taking actions without human intervention at each step. Without guardrails, a single agent could spawn expensive API calls, query protected databases, or trigger costly compute operations.
Snowflake announced security integrations with 1Password, Aembit, Linx Security, SailPoint, and Saviynt. These partnerships enable identity verification, credential management, and access control within the gateway. When an AI agent requests access to a resource, these tools verify the agent's legitimacy and permissions before granting it.
The timing reflects real enterprise pain points. As organizations deploy more agents, they face two problems. First, cost control. Claude Code and similar tools can make rapid, cascading decisions that result in unexpected bills. Second, security. An agent with broad permissions could access data beyond its intended scope or modify critical systems.
Cortex AI Gateway positions Snowflake as infrastructure for the agent era. Rather than forcing companies to choose between deployment agility and safety, the platform lets enterprises govern agents without blocking them entirely. The multi-vendor approach matters too. By supporting agents from different makers, Snowflake avoids lock-in and appeals to enterprises using multiple AI tools.
This is not a complete solution. Governance still requires humans to define policies upfront and monitor agent activity. But it removes friction from a process that currently demands
