Launched last year, Indigo initially positioned itself as delivering superior optical quality and manual controls reminiscent of professional cameras. The app targeted users frustrated with smartphone computational photography defaults. Now Adobe is layering generative AI directly into the shooting experience.

The company is integrating external AI models rather than relying on its own Firefly technology, a notable decision that suggests either technical limitations or strategic partnerships. Adobe has not detailed which models power the new features, leaving questions about data handling and processing costs.

The pivot reflects broader industry patterns. Camera apps increasingly function as post-processing pipelines disguised as capture tools. Adobe's move transforms Indigo from a purist's alternative into something closer to traditional mobile photo editing, just happening in real-time.

Generative tools in camera apps typically handle tasks like background removal, object inpainting, or style transfer during or immediately after capture.
