Google is rolling out transparency disclosures for AI-generated or AI-edited advertisements across its platforms. Starting now, users can view a "created or edited with AI" label in Google's "My Ad Center" when browsing ads on Search, Discover, and YouTube.
The label appears under a "how this ad was made" section, giving users direct visibility into whether advertisers used generative AI tools to produce or modify creative assets. This marks a concrete step toward mandatory ad disclosure as AI content creation accelerates across digital advertising.
Google announced the feature Thursday. The company has been gradually tightening rules around synthetic media in ads. Last year, it required advertisers to disclose AI-generated or manipulated content in political and sensitive categories. This expansion applies the same transparency standard across all ad types and surfaces.
The move aligns with regulatory pressure building worldwide. The FTC has signaled enforcement against deceptive AI claims in advertising. The EU's Digital Services Act similarly mandates disclosure of synthetic content. Google's approach preempts stricter rules by making disclosures machine-readable and user-facing rather than buried in fine print.
The implementation comes as advertisers increasingly rely on generative AI for copywriting, image generation, and video editing. Tools like DALL-E, Midjourney, and ChatGPT have made creating ad assets faster and cheaper. But without disclosure, audiences cannot distinguish human-made from machine-made creative work, raising questions about informed consent.
Google's system relies on advertiser self-reporting. Advertisers must flag AI usage themselves when uploading assets to Google Ads. The company has not announced automated detection mechanisms. This creates enforcement gaps. Bad-faith advertisers can omit disclosures without immediate consequences, though Google says it will monitor for compliance violations.
The label addresses a real consumer need. Users increasingly want to know if content originated from AI.
