Anthropic has acquired Stainless, a New York developer tools startup founded in 2022 that automates SDK generation and maintenance. The acquisition strengthens Anthropic's ability to manage software development kits for its AI models and APIs.

Stainless built automation tools that handle the tedious work of creating and updating SDKs, the libraries developers use to interact with APIs. Rather than manually writing code for multiple programming languages, developers can use Stainless to generate these kits automatically. The platform became widely adopted across the AI industry, with OpenAI, Google, and Cloudflare among its customers.

The deal reflects a broader trend in AI infrastructure. As large language model providers race to build developer ecosystems, tooling that reduces friction becomes strategically valuable. Stainless eliminates a significant friction point: keeping SDKs consistent and current as APIs evolve. Without automation, SDK maintenance demands grow exponentially with each supported language and each API update.

For Anthropic, the acquisition serves multiple purposes. The company can now improve how developers interact with Claude, its flagship AI model. It gains experienced engineers focused on developer experience, a competitive lever as Anthropic competes with OpenAI and other model providers for developer mindshare. It also acquires proven technology and business relationships.

Stainless' customer roster signals the product solved a real problem. OpenAI, Google, and Cloudflare don't acquire or integrate tools lightly. The startup's ability to integrate into existing workflows made it attractive to enterprises and AI companies alike.

The acquisition price remains undisclosed, but the deal underscores how Anthropic is building out its infrastructure layer. Rather than only competing on model performance, the company invests in the entire developer experience stack. This includes improved tooling, API access, and now SDK automation.
